Like most families, we’re one busy family. With 3 children, 2 busy parents, a dog and a leopard gecko, we are definitely a busy family. My family is committed to sitting down to eat dinner together each night, but I often find that we’re eating snacks on the run to appointments, to activities, to school; just plain on the run. Teaching my children to live a healthy lifestyle is important to me. One way that I nurture healthy habits in my children it to always provide wholesome snacks, even when we’re running out the door. To make it easy for my children (and for me), I always keep a busy family snack bag ready to go. As a parent educator, I’m familiar with nutritional challenges that many children face. Recently, data has shown that less than 1% of children get the recommended amount of whole grains in their diet. I also know that protein is an essential nutrient for growing children. I’m always looking for ways to provide snacks that more nutritious with protein, fiber and whole grains.
I like to make sure that I have a snack bag filled with wholesome snacks (and napkins and wet wipes) ready to go. My children can quickly grab the bag and add a water bottle, cheese stick and piece of fruit. I keep both a larger family sized bag and an individual-sized bag ready to go all the time.
I also like to make my own wholesome snack mix that I keep ready to go in our snack bag. I can make up a big batch that will last us two to three busy days.
- 4 cups popped pop corn
- 3 cups Honey Maid Go Bites
- 1 1/2 cups almonds or walnuts
- 1 1/2 cups dried cranberries or fruit
- Mix ingredients together well. Store in an airtight container.

I haven’t seen the Go Bites yet with protein. I’m definitely going to have to head out and pick some up. It’s so hard to find convenient snacks that have protein in them. Thanks for sharing your trail mix recipe! I’m sure it will be a hit with my kids.

Hope the kiddos enjoy the snack mix, Corinne. The best part is how easy it is to whip up.
