My daughter is one smart cookie.  She knew that she could rope me in when she asked me to help her decorate her dorm room and (I quote), “You could put it on your blog.” (said with big innocent eyes).  Of course, between the big eyes and the blog angle, I was all in on the idea.  I shared the candy wreath I made for her last week.  I also made a Christmas pillow slipcover that she can put on a pillow already on her bed.  The great thing is that when the slipcover is not on the pillow, it folds up into a small package that is easily stored in a small dorm room.

Whenever I’m in a store with a fabric department, I always have to cruise through the remnants bin.  It’s like playing the lottery – you never know if you’ll win nor lose.  Recently I won with this lovely Santa fabric.  It was large enough to make an envelope pillow cover and inexpensive enough to send to a college student.

I followed this super easy tutorial from Tatertots and Jello.     I cut my fabric so that it was 1 1/2 inches larger than the pillow form.  That gave me enough room for seam allowances and a small flange on the pillow. I would have given myself 2 1/2 to 3 extra inches to make the flange larger, but my remant wasn’t that large.

Look at how much smaller the Christmas pillow slipcover is than the actual pillow!  My daughter can simply put this Christmas slipcover on the pillow already on her bed and the fold it up in January for easy storage until she can bring it home in the summer.  If I’d sent her an entire Christmas pillow, she wouldn’t have the space to store it.

The Christmas envelope pillow cover turned out so cute that I’ll be cruising those remnant bins again this week because I want to make one (or two) for myself.

Do you know a college student or deployed soldier who might enjoy some holiday room decorating with a Christmas pillow slipcover?

  1. I am in love with the Santa fabric! I always check out the remnants bin, you never know what you find! I think the envelope style pillow case is perfect. I have a few pillow forms that I use over and over. I know that college students and those with small apartments would love this!

    1. You inspired me with your fall leaf pillow, Cynthia. I want to get more of this fun Santa fabric. It would look great in my house, too.

  2. Hi Susan – What a sweet and thoughtful craft for your girl – and I could totally see that whole scene going down too! I don’t do a lot with fabric (not as creative and crafty as you are) but I am also all over the remnant bin when I go to the fabric store. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Hugs, Holly
