It’s that time of year again for college students – college care package time!  The end of October until winter break just drags on and on.  It’s a particularly tough time for college freshman.  Some of the newness and excitement of being out on your own has been replaced with reality and the drudgery of being a grown-up.  So, it’sthe perfect time for college care packages!

College Care Packages

a college care package made up of popcorn, Halls, bubbles, command hooks, bandaids, sticky notes, candy and gum

I started by collecting items that are needed and items that are fun.

I had to start with some organizing items, of course:  Command hooks and different sized stick-on notes.  Then I moved onto practical items: cough drops, tissues and bandaids{I made the bandaid container from a Mentos bottle}.  Next up were snacks: microwave popcorn, gum and a candy bar.  I had to include a silly, fun childhood item: bubbles.  And lastly, I made two different kinds of cookies.

I wanted to send one care package to a friend’s daughter, C.  She is in the first semester of her freshman year.  I wrapped most of the items up just to make it a little more fun for C. (who doesn’t love to unwrap a gift?)

I figured C. could use the cute polka do bucket to store things in her room.  I packaged the cookies in repurposed packaging from store bought salad.

I also wanted to send a care package to a friend’s son, J., who is also in the first semester of his freshman year.  I didn’t think he’d appreciate a pink and green polka dot theme, so I went with a more sophisticated black and white.  {I used the same paper I used for the office organization box.}

I figured that J. would be able to reuse the Tupperware container that I sent the cookies in.  He could use it for food items or to hold other things in his dorm room.

For shipping I made sure to put the liquid bubbles in seal top bags.  I used plastic shopping bags as padding in the boxes.  I thought that C. and J. could use the empty plastic bags around the dorm room for trash or to pack shoes in for their next trip home.

Have you got any other good care package items that you’ve found are appreciated?  I’m already planning for the late February, early March care packages.

  7. Years ago when my daughter and her friends went off to college I had fun putting together care packages with FUN and useful things. I included candy, toothbrush, rubber mouse to place in roomate’s bed, a map of home state (so you can always find your way home) , etc. I ALSO included a fill in the blank letter with an envelope with my address and a stamp.
    I had things like:
When I got this box I thought_______
The funniest thing that has happened so far is________
The first thing I will do when I get home is_________
My favorite class is ________ because_________
The thing I miss most that I never though I would is ______
One letter was so funny. He said the best thing about the box was the fun stuff. All his Mother sent was kleenex ! Ha ha.
Well, you get the idea. That was 7 years ago and I treasure those letters. When they graduated college, I made copies of the letters and included them in the Graduation card.
I think I sent out 8 boxes. THE ONLY ONE TO NOT RETURN THE LETTER was my daughter. She still is not good at communication.
