Our family is best friends with another family.  That’s so rare to find – every member of two different families that all get along well.  Our friends are big comic book fans just like our family.  Although we live 300 miles apart (and have lived 100o miles apart over the years), we share every New Year’s Eve together and we meet at ComicCon whenever we can.  With a birthday coming up, I knew I wanted to make a superhero themed birthday gift for our friends’ son.  Since he is (and we are) ©2015 MARVEL Avengers fans, I know that he’ll love this DIY Avengers Card Clipboard. The great thing about this project is that you can personalize it to the recipient’s interests by choosing different cards and you could even add their name.

DIY Avengers

Yes, both families are big MARVEL Avengers fans. Big. Big fans.

With so many superheroes to choose from in the Avengers, there’s a hero for everyone. Since Walmart is the only place with Hallmark cards starting at 47 cents and I knew I’d need several cards to make the DIY clipboard, I figured I’d run to Walmart for all the supplies I needed.  You can use any theme of cards that you like to make your own DIY Clipboard, but with our families’ shared love of comic books, I knew I wanted to pick up the new 2015 MARVEL Avengers kids birthday cards. I found the Hallmark cards starting at 47 cents in the card aisle and the ©2015 MARVEL Avengers in an endcap at the end of the aisle. I also found an Avengers sticker pack that I grabbed to add to the clipboard.

Supplies

Clipboard

Assorted Cards – approximately 5-7 depending on the size of the images

Stickers (optional)

Craft Paint

Paint Brush – I prefer a sponge brush

Decoupage glue

Paint the clipboard with 2-3 coats of craft paint.  This is a great project to use up those half-bottles of craft paint that you have squirrels away (tell me that I’m not the only one).  Let the paint dry well between each coat.

Trim the images from the cards.  Lay the images out on the clipboard and plan your layout.  Trim the cards so they’ll fit your plan. You can trim cards to emphasize the images like I did by trimming around Hulk’s fist.

As I was trimming the cards, I realized that these Hallmark ©2015 MARVEL Avengers cards came with a button.  I removed those and set them aside to add to my clipboard later.

I carefully decoupaged the images to the painted clipboard by coating only the back of the images with decoupage clue.  I used heavy jars and cans to weigh the images down while the glue dried so that the images adhered well.  Once the glue had dried, I generously covered the images and the clipboard with more decoupage glue to seal the edges of the images and make them more durable.

I liked that the Avengers stickers were square and looked almost like a strip of film negatives so I added them to the top and bottom of the back of the clipboard only.  I think it looks like film strips with the stickers in a row like that (and I like the way it looks).

I can’t wait to see my friends’ son’s reaction to this personalized birthday gift I made for him.  Since we all are Avengers fans, I used Avengers’ images, but since he is a big Captain America fan, I highlighted those images on the clipboard.

Remember the round buttons that I carefully removed from the card earlier?  I added one to the clip of the clipboard.  I simply attached it by slipping it over the top of the clip, but you could glue it to the metal clip to make it permanent.

What a fun personalized birthday gift.

  2. I am making one of these with Wonder Woman pictures! Love this idea. Now I can have a Wondermom clipboard with me while I brainstorm blog post ideas. And congrats, by the way, on finding another family that your whole family gets along with. Before we had kids, it was hard enough to find couples both me and my husband liked–adding kids to the mix makes it that much harder!
