My oldest “baby” is just finishing her first year of college.  My second “baby” is about to get her driver’s license and my youngest “baby” is almost taller than I am. I am so proud of the people they’re becoming, but I confess that I miss those baby days and all the adorable baby things (you know, tiny socks and sweet outfits).  Every so often, I get that urge to buy baby things (tell me I’m not the only one that gets it). I have found the perfect solution for my desire to buy cute little baby things – I purchase them and then I donate a new baby gift bag to my local homeless shelter.  Based on my years working with the homeless and as the mother of three, I’ve created a free printable checklist you can use to create your own new baby gift basket to donate.

Every new mother deserves the joy of receiving new baby gifts.  There are soon-to-be and new mothers in homeless and domestic abuse shelters that would appreciate a baby gift bag to celebrate the arrival of their new baby.  I want to share that joy with them by donating a new baby gift bag filled with cute brand-new baby items for their precious new baby.

If you’re thinking of donating a baby stroller, be sure to check out the Doona stroller.

Putting together a donated new baby gift bag is a bit different from a traditional new baby gift basket.  The mom and baby at a homeless shelter will be in transition and will need to be able to easily take the gift bag with them when they move.  Print out your own copy of Donating a New Mother Gift Bag Checklist before you head to the store to go shopping.  Look for items that are easy to pack up and move. A tip is to make sure that everything you donate can fit inside a diaper bag.  It’s also helpful to find items that can be used for more than one use or can be used as the baby grows older.  Choose gender neutral items to donate (unless you’ve spoken with the homeless shelter and know the gender of the baby).  It’s also nice to add one or more gifts for the new mother, too.

I knew that I could find all the items on my checklist at Walmart, so I happily popped over to do some fun baby shopping.  I found lots of precious Disney Baby products in the baby section with the bedding and with the diaper bags.

Since I use the diaper bag as the gift bag, I look for an adorable diaper bag that is sturdy, darker colors (to hide travel dust and dirt) and will work for a boy or girl.  I also look for a diaper bag like this adorable Disney Baby Winnie the Pooh one that comes with a waterproof changing pad, zippered pouch and insulated bag (to carry formula and snacks). As a bonus, it also came with its own wipes container.

I had so much fun choosing the Disney Baby Lion King coordinating items for the gift bag.  I found these receiving blankets that can be used to cuddle baby and can also be used as cute burp cloths.

I added the Disney Baby Lion King heavy blanket that came with a coordinating hat (isn’t the hat just the cutest thing?!)  I absolutely had to add a developmentally appropriate baby toy (all my years as a parent educator is being put to good use)  that is soft, safe (no button eyes that can become a choking hazard), has different textures and a face to stimulate the baby’s brain development.  Oh, and it’s just so precious, too (shopping for baby gifts is a blast!).

I printed out a gift tag to add to the diaper bag with a sweet ribbon accent.  Every mom should feel special when they receive a baby gift and it’s the little things like a cute tag that make a gift just that much more special.  You can print your own copy of this gift tag for your donated bag.

I had so much fun choosing just the right baby items to add to this baby gift bag.  Not only was it fun to look at all the sweet baby items, but it was fun for me to imagine the happiness that this gift bag will bring to someone in a difficult situation.  I can’t wait to donate a new baby gift bag again soon (really soon!)

Do you have a domestic abuse or homeless shelter nearby that you could donate a Disney Baby new mom gift bag to?

  1. I love each and every item you chose to fill the bag. They are not only cute but also well thought out. I know any mother would love and appreciate these gifts and the thoughtfulness that is behind them. I appreciate that you brought this subject up. I will go and see if there is a shelter in my city and then go shopping!

  2. Susan, I love this checklist! You are right, putting together a new baby gift bag to donate to a shelter is much different than to give at a baby shower. It’s humbling to be reminded that some of the basic necessities such as sanitary napkins and nursing bras aren’t items everyone can easily obtain for themselves. Thank you for this list!

  3. This is absolutely brilliant! I love what you’ve done, and this is such a great idea. I hope you influence a ton of other people (including me!) to do the same. I know there is a very happy mom somewhere right about now! #client

  4. I soo get wanting to buy baby things! I love buying gifts for baby showers… there is just something so joyful about it. I think it’s awesome that you’re creating these baby gift bags for women in need. What a wonderful way to give to moms who really need some help. I am inspired, and will plan on doing this in my community.
