I recently shared with you that having good dental hygiene is a big deal in our family.  Five out of 5 of us in our family have had braces.   Four out of the 5 of us spent at least 3 years of our childhood in areas that did not have fluoride in the water.  We’ve had 20 teeth extracted from 4 of our mouths.   We have too much money invested in our teeth and too many risk factors not to encourage healthy dental habits in our family.

My kids are now in their tweens and teens.  I no longer floss and brush their teeth like I did when they were young.  Although, they’re now responsible for their dental care, I still want to check up on them and encourage their good dental hygiene habits.   As a parent educator, I know that positive reinforcement is much more effective and pleasant for my children and me.  One trick I like to use is to leave cute little reminder notes around for my children to find.

I start with bright happy colored sticky notes.  I write corny cute notes for them to find.   Lucky for me, my kids find my corny sense of humor amusing.

I surprise my son by leaving the notes where he will find them when he goes to brush his teeth.

Another trick I use is to find quality hygiene products that are also fun.  My son is a big comic book fan and always asks for this LISTERINE SMART RINSE.  The superhero label is fun and he finds the taste pleasant.  He’s much more likely to use this rinse each day when it’s enjoyable and fun to use.     The LISTERINE ULTRACLEAN ACCESS FLOSSER makes flossing so much easier for my son that he doesn’t mind flossing at all (a mom might even say he enjoys it).

My daughters are older teens, but I still leave notes for my 16-year-old to find just because it’s fun.  And although she’s growing up, I want her to have a little childlike surprise and know that her mom is thinking of her.  She and I have also found this LISTERINE ULTRACLEAN floss fun to use because it’s different from other floss we’ve used.  It’s a bit stretchy which makes it more comfortable to use.  My daughter is more like to floss better since this LISTERINE floss is more comfortable.
