Our neighborhood has a block party on Halloween every year. All the families get together for a pot luck dinner, lots of photos of the kids in their costumes and then trick-or-treating. We all start looking forward to the Halloween party as soon as school starts in September. I enjoy bringing a Halloween-themed dish for the pot luck. It’s a fun way for me to be creative and celebrate Halloween (and impress my kids). This year I’m planning on bringing a delightful Halloween Graveyard Treat with Fanta and OREO.

I’ve always enjoyed making Halloween-themed food. When else can you make food with candy worms, candy eyeballs or food shaped like body parts and have people excited to eat it? It’s a wacky time of year and I make the most of it by whipping up fun thematic food dishes for my children to enjoy. I also enjoy surprising my children with unexpected notes and treats throughout the month (not every day or it wouldn’t be unexpected, would it?) in their lunchbox or as an after-school treat. It’s a small way for me to contribute to the excitement and wonder of childhood.

Ingredients

Orange gelatin – 3 oz box of orange flavored gelatin

Fanta Orange – I purchased the 12-pack cans so that I can serve the extra cans at the party.

Unflavored Gelatin – 2 packets of unflavored gelatin

Sweetened Condensed Milk

OREO Cookies – I purchased the OREO Glow-in-the-dark 30 count (2 cookies) so that I can surprise my children with a package of OREOs as a treat and hand the rest out to trick-or-treaters.

Gummy Worms

Step One – Orange Gelatin

Mix 1/2 cup boiling water with the 3 oz package of orange-flavored gelatin; stir until gelatin is disolved. Allow the mixture to cool for 4-5 minutes and then add 3/4 cup of Fanta Orange. This is less liquid than the recipe on the box calls for and that’s purposeful so that the gelatin will be more firm and easier to cut into cubes later.  Pour the Fanta orange gelatin into an 8 x 8 inch pan and place in the refrigerator until firm (I left it in the refrigerator overnight). Cut firm gelatin into small, approximately 1/2 inch square, cubes. Place gelatin cubes into a second 8 x 8 inch pan. I prefer using a clear pan at this point so that you can see the contrasting orange and white gelatin when you serve the Graveyard Treat.

Step Two – White Gelatin

Sprinkle 2 packets of unflavored gelatin onto 1/2 cup cold water. Let the gelatin and water sit without stirring until the gelatin blooms, after approximately 3-5 minutes. You’ll know it’s bloomed when it looks gelatin-like (before it looked like powder sprinkled on water). While you’re waiting for the gelatin to bloom, boil 1 1/2 cup water. Add the boiling water to the gelatin and mix well until all the gelatin is dissolved. Let sit 10-15 minutes until it cools. Add sweetened condensed milk and mix well.

When the sweetened condensed milk mixture is cool enough that it won’t melt the orange gelatin cubes, pour the mixture over the orange gelatin cubes. Place in refrigerator until firm (I left it overnight).

Step Three – Decorate

Crush OREO cookies into fine crumbs. I removed the creme filling before I crushed the cookies, but you can crush the whole cookie if you prefer.

I’ll serve the extra OREOs and Fanta at our Halloween block party in addition to the Halloween Graveyard Treat.

When you cut the Graveyard Gelatin Treat, you can see the orange gelatin cubes mixed into the white gelatin.  It’s an unexpected surprise to find the pretty gelatin treat hidden beneath the cookie “dirt” and candy worms and tombstones. It’s little extra surprises like this that make Halloween treats so much fun, so I say embrace it and have fun!

It was easy to find all the ingredients I needed on a trip to Walmart. I found the Fanta on the soda aisle and the Glow-in-the-dark OREO packs in a display near the Halloween decorations.

I’m always interested in finding new recipes and Evette Rios, the host of Recipe Rehab on CBS, is creating a custom, Walmart-exclusive recipe that combines both Fanta and OREO products. What celebration do you have coming up that needs a Halloween Graveyard Treat to make it complete?
