We grill out as often as we can in the summer. Not only does all of my family enjoy grilled dishes, but grilling is our secret to entertaining guests. It’s easy to make multiple menu options on the grill to meet the dietary requirements and preferences of our guests. When we have large numbers of guests over, we often grill burgers and I make sure to add a veggie cuisine option. Grilling with a twist makes entertaining just a bit more fun and adding Hawaiian barbecue sauce is an unexpected treat. Both types of burgers go great with this savory Hawaiian barbecue sauce, but the Hawaiian barbecue veggie burgers are always a big hit.

I grew up in Hawai’i and grilling out is everyone’s favorite entertaining style (think large luau style meals).  So when we entertain guests, my first thought is, “What can we grill that everyone will enjoy and are there any dietary requests?” Veggie patties provide a healthier option that is delicious and meets most of my guests dietary requests.

My sister-in-law and her children are coming from out-of-state to visit next week. My niece is a vegetarian and with a total of 4 teens, a tween and 3 adults, this is the perfect time to whip up my Hawaiian barbecue veggie burgers along with our regular burgers. To spend more time with visiting  with family, I like to prepare the sauce a few days early and keep it in the fridge until we grill our burgers, but you can easily prepare the day of your cookout.

While I was at Target running my weekly errands, I picked up the ingredients for the barbecue sauce and MorningStar Farms Garden Veggie Patties. I found MorningStar Farms in my Target’s frozen food aisle in the meat alternatives section.

You’ll also need to pick up the following:

Ingredients

1/2 cup olive oil

1/2 cup ketchup

1/2 cup shoyu (soy sauce)

1/4 cup brown sugar

3/4 minced celery

3/4 grated onion

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 Tbsp grated fresh ginger

1 Tbsp chili sauce

1 dash liquid smoke seasoning

If you’re going to make the Hawaiian barbecue sauce the same day you’ll use it, you will need to prepare the Hawaiian barbecue sauce a couple of hours before you’re ready to grill. The actual prep time only takes about 5 minutes, but you need to let the sauce simmer for an hour.

Be sure to mince the celery and garlic very fine. Also, take the time to grate the onion and ginger root. This helps release the flavor and thicken the barbecue sauce as it’s cooking.

When you’re ready to grill, just place the veggie patties on one side of the grill and the burgers on the other. Simply follow the instructions on the packaging to ensure proper cooking of your veggie patties.

Veggie Burger Option

I place the veggie patties and the burgers on the buffet table on separate platters. I let each guest add as much of Hawaiian barbecue sauce as they’d like to their burger choice.

I usually serve our Hawaiian barbecue veggie burgers with Hawaiian style macaroni salad and a fresh salad or pickled vegetables.

I like being able to make easy and fresh meals that give my guests delicious options to fit their personal dietary needs and tastes. I’ve found that adding these Hawaiian barbecue veggie burgers to our grill is an easy way to please all my guests.

Ingredients
  1. 1/2 cup olive oil
  2. 1/2 cup ketchup
  3. 1/2 cup shoyu (soy sauce)
  4. 1/4 cup brown sugar
  5. 3/4 cup minced celery
  6. 3/4 cup grated onion
  7. 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  8. 2 Tbsp grated fresh ginger
  9. 1 Tbsp chili sauce
  10. 1 dash liquid smoke
Instructions
  1. Mix ingredients in a saucepan. Bring the sauce to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for one hour. Stir well occasionally.

  1. We are big lovers of Morningstar items. My daughter has been a vegetarian for about 10 years now and we have come to find Morningstar has a great variety and they all taste great. The BBQ sauce recipes sounds absolutely delicious. I will have to give it a try. I can imagine it would taste great on chicken also. Susan, I agree with you – grilling when having company makes it so easy to please everyone. Enjoy your family time.

    1. Haven’t yet tried the barbecue sauce on chicken, but I “know” it’ll be good. 🙂 I need to pick your brain for more vegetarian-friendly meals before my niece comes to visit.
