I grew up with a highly organized mom in a military family. I thought the entire world planned ahead (she meal planned a month at a time). I thought everyone lived in a highly organized home. My mom was organized because it allowed her and our family to have more time and space for the things we really wanted to do, things like travel, do crafts, entertain, read, and spend time together as a family.

As I grew older I learned that not everyone grew up learned how to be organized as they were growing up. But the wonderful thing about organization, is that it’s made up of skills everyone and anyone can learn. It’s a big reason why I became a professional organizer – to help others learn these powerful habits and skills.

How to Be Organized

There are many different skills involved in being organized. These are skills that need to be practiced and adapted for your unique preferences and life situation.

Unlike home improvement and organizing shows, it takes longer than an hour to organize a space. And then it takes ongoing work to maintain organization. That’s where tidy habits come in.

The great thing is that because there are many different tasks, habits and options, you can choose the ones that work best for you. And when life changes, you can try new options that will work better for you.

It’s best to work on one new habit at a time. Break the habit down into a manageable size. Learn it. Make it part of your routine. Make incremental improvements Then add a new habit again and again and again.

The stumbling block most people run into is that they try to eat the elephant all at once rather than one bite at a time. With daily habits, you break the overall goal of being organized down into smaller, manageable habits.

How to Develop Daily Habits for Organizing & Tidying

I recommend developing organizing habits that take 10-15 minutes to accomplish. Everyone can find 10 minutes a day. Once that habit becomes second nature, you can add another. Within a couple of months you will have added 4 to 8 habits to your daily routine that will be helping you be organized and you won’t have to think about them because they’ll have become habits.

I’ve created a free printable list of 10 tidy habits that establish a strong foundation for learning how to be organized. To download your free copy of the 10 Organizing Tidy Habits, simply sign up for our Exclusive Content below.

Most printers offer you the option to print in greyscale which is in black and white.
