How to Fold Curtains and Organize for a Move

As a military mom and veteran, I’ve moved more than 25 times. I’ve learned a few tricks to make moving a bit easier and much more organized. One of the tricks that makes moving easier for us is keeping all our curtains organized so that we know exactly what will work in our new home. These tips for how to move curtains are simple to do, cost nothing and make setting your new home up much easier. 

I’ve moved to all around the country and the world. Hanging curtains is one of the first things you need to do in your new home for your privacy. With our frequent moves, I learned to keep all our curtains because buying new curtains for every window every year or other year is just not something we could afford, plus it is more wasteful than I can live with. I learned to pack our curtains away and have them easily accessible for our next move and new home. This saves us money, time and stress. 

How to Move Curtains

Be sure to plan time when you’re moving out of your current house to take down your curtains and clean them. You’ll need to plan this time into your schedule since the last week before you move is so hectic. 

Also make the time to iron and neatly fold the curtains. Taking the time now to iron and fold the curtains neatly will save you time in your new home. Before you fold them, measure each set of curtains so you’ll know exactly what size they are with no guessing or frustration. Choose a box or tub (or two) to pack your curtains in. Fold your curtains so that they will fit into the specific boxes you chose. 

Write which rooms curtains belong to if they coordinate with the room’s decor. List how many panels there are for each set of curtains and the measurements of the panels. Write this information on a slip of paper or index card and pin it to the curtains. This simple step will allow you to quickly identify which curtains you have that will fit the windows in your new home.

Be sure to file the curtains in your box rather than stacking them. When you file the curtains, you can quickly see the measurements and can easily remove the curtains you need.   Tip: if you turn the box on it’s side gravity will help you pack as many curtains as possible into the box. 

Pack the curtains into easily identifiable boxes or tubs. Labeling the boxes will save you time when you move into your new home.  Moving doesn’t have to be stressful if you plan ahead and organize your move to make it work for you.
