I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for State Farm. I received a promotional item to thank me for participating, but as always, all opinions are my own.
A a military family one of my favorite ways to learn about a new community is to find a local organization where we can volunteer. I’ve volunteered all over the country and at bases in 2 overseas countries, doing everything from teaching adult literacy to teaching parent education to shredding confidential documents to working with street kids. As soon as my children were old enough, we found ways that they could volunteer also. I was so excited to learn about the State Farm Neighborhood Assist Initiative and that with my simple vote, I can help local organizations all over the country.
For many years, my kids have been making care kits to give to the homeless. We fill these kits with personal care items or with breakfast items. Then the children draw pictures and write notes to put on each care package. It’s a great opportunity to talk with the kids about respecting and caring for people in our new community. The kids enjoy decorating the boxes to make someone else feel happy.
In the past, we also worked with our local soccer organization to gather donations of soccer uniforms and equipment to send to our troops deployed to Afghanistan. The troops were able to put on soccer exhibition games with the local children and then pass out the donated equipment to them. It was a huge success and we sent 11 large boxes of equipment. My favorite part of this project was that it helped both our troops and the Afghani children.
State Farm shares my commitment to volunteering through their State Farm Neighborhood Assist Initiative. This is the 3rd year of the program and this year 4,000 causes applied. State Farm spent over 650 hours reviewing applications and has chosen the top 200 causes. Now they are asking for you and me to assist in selecting the top 40.
Between now and May 16th, you can vote each day for your favorite cause. It’s easy to vote from this free Facebook App. Your vote will help determine which 40 causes receive $25,000 to further their work.
I spent quite a bit of time pouring through the 200 causes that need my vote. The app allows you to search for causes by your state and by cause. I found 3 causes working with veterans. I was particularly touched by Three Hots and A Cot in Alabama that is working with homeless vets. Their program plans to provide job training, life skills training, trauma-informed and evidence-based counseling and case management services to help homeless and at-risk veterans. Now that’s a cause I can support.
The great thing about the State Farm Neighborhood Assist Initiative is that you get 10 votes each day, so you don’t have to pick just one cause to support. You can give all your votes to one cause or spread your votes out among a bunch of causes that you support.
It’s easy and quick (unless like me, you want to learn more about all these amazing causes and spend time reading about each one), so come join me each day in supporting your favorite cause by voting at the State Farm Neighborhood Assist Initiative.
Thanks to Mom Central Consulting and State Farm.
