I love cookies. I love all cookies. Really. I haven’t met a cookie I don’t like. I enjoy baking for my family (it’s how I show my love), so we have many favorite cookie recipes. Recently I was feeling a bit nostaligic so I dug out this recipe from my grandmother. She grew up on a farm and lived through the Depression so some how those two experiences combined to make her an amazing cook (I’m not sure how farm + Depression = great cook, but it does).  This old fashioned Jam Thumbprint cookie recipe of my grandmother’s is my family’s new favorite cookie recipe. And don’t tell anyone, but these cookies are very easy to make.

Make a batch of these cookies as an iconic after-school snack (you could turn on an episode of Leave It to Beaver to enjoy with these old fashioned cookies). You can purchase jam for this recipe or make a batch of your own easy freezer jam to use.

They’re also a great holiday cookie for entertaining or gift giving. With the red jam, they’re a happy holiday party cookie. If you like fruit cookies, you should also try my Oatmeal Blueberry Cookies.

It’s easy to make the cookies ahead, freeze them and then just add the jam when you’re ready to serve them.

I can enjoy these old fashioned Jam Thumbprint Cookies and fondly remember my grandmother baking for me when I was a child. What a sweet cookie and sweet memory. What’s your favorite old fashioned cookie?

  1. Susan, these cookies look so yummy. The remind me of something my Grandmother used to make. I am also reminded of a cookie/bar my Mom used to make that was spicy and had jam running down the center. How handy that you can freeze these and then add the jam later.

  2. Yummy to the highest flavor! Thanks for the awesome recipe. My Excellent Mom used to make these often and I just loved the different jams she would use in them- apricot, blackberry, strawberry or cherry. Taught all of us kids to sew, cook and clean. I’m very grateful to have been raised by smart kind parents:) I hope everyone has a fantastic and safe Holiday Season no matter what you celebrate!
