Our dog, Lila, is more than our pet, she’s an integral part of our family. She’s moved with us to four homes in three states and has traveled with us to eight states. Taking care of her and her health is important to me. Lila is now 13 years young and just as crazy and fun-loving as always (I have the dog with the lamp shade on her head at a party!). I take steps to care for her toys, treats and dog food. I have found these tips to organize pet supplies for dogs work well for us.

Lila is my buddy. She’s my shadow and constant companion. When I was recovering from my appendectomy, she never left my side. She takes such good care of us, so I want to make sure that I take good care of her, her health and wellness.

In addition to taking her for regular veterinary visits, making sure she receives all necessary immunizations and medications, I also organize her pet supplies and follow a regular cleaning schedule for her items. Even though I’m a busy mama, I take the time to take care of Lila, just like I take care of the rest of my family. Tips to Organize Pet Supplies for Dogs

Pick up and Organize Dog Toys – Keep a plastic basket to hold all your dog’s toys. I use a plastic basket so that it’s easy to clean and sterilize. I can tell you from personal experience how important it is to keep dog toys picked up. I stepped on a dog bone and broke my foot (technically the fifth metatarsal). Embarrassingly, I had to deal with a walking boot while have young children and an impending military move all because of a stray dog toy. Picking up dog toys each day also keeps them from getting dusty and easy to locate for cleaning. You can even train your dog to put away her toys with just a little effort and time.

Keep Treats in an Airtight Food-Safe Container – I use repurposed food jars to store dog treats.  I place dog treats in a jar with a screw top because I know my family is more likely to close the jar tightly so that the treats will stay fresh. Keeping treats fresh is best for my dog’s wellness and enjoyment. While I prefer to use repurposed glass jars, I chose to use a plastic popcorn container to store dog treats since my children often give Lila treats and plastic jar + children + dog treats + excited dog = much safer scenario than a glass jar. I use food-safe repurposed containers because I know that if they’re safe for people food, then they’re safe for dog treats.  I also clearly label the container so that there’s no possible confusion on the contents of the container.

Lila comes running whenever she hears her dog treat jar being opened. Now that she’s getting older, taking care of her dental health is even more important than ever, so I’m happy to give her a treat that also helps with her daily dental care.

Keep Dog Food in an Airtight Container –  Just like with dog treats, I keep Lila’s dog food in an airtight container to maintain its freshness. You can purchase containers specifically designed to hold a large bag of dog food. Using an airtight container that closes securely is also important for owners of smart dogs that will spend every waking minute trying to figure out how to get into that large, tempting bag of dog food (ask me how I know).

Place Food and Water Bowels in a Tray or Tub –  I place Lila’s dog food and water bowl inside a plastic tub. This helps keep drips and dribbles contained and Lila’s eating area clean. It also helps keep my floor much more clean. The tub keeps any mess contained and it’s easy to pick up and wash in the sink. A clean eating area is healthier eating area.

Wash all Dog Supplies Regularly –  When was the last time you washed your dog’s food bowl, water bowl and toys? I try to wash Lila’s toys, food and water bowl daily. I know I don’t want to eat off the same plate or drink out of the same cup day after day without washing (and I don’t generally lick my plate when I’m done eating the ways Lila does!).  I also wash her toys frequently since she has them in her mouth. Clean bowls and toys are healthier for everyone.

Use Bowls that Can Be Sanitized – I use metal bowls that can be sanitized with boiling water. Periodically, after washing Lila’s food and water bowls, I sanitize them with boiling water to maintain the cleanest and healthiest environment for Lila’s food and water.

Choose Toys that Can Be Washed and Sanitized – There are all kinds of dogs toys available. I specifically choose toys that can be washed with hot, soapy water and sanitized with boiling water. I want to keep the surfaces that Lila is putting in her mouth as clean as possible.

I was at my local Giant Food store shopping for my family last week. Giant carries natural food selections for people and pets and I’m there every week doing grocery shopping, so it’s convenient to pick up wellness-minded products for Lila and even dog toys and accessories. It makes my busy life much easier when I can do one-stop shopping for my family and for Lila. I found Purina DentaLife treats, Purina Dog Chow Natural and Beyond Pet Foods on the pet food aisle of my Giant Food store. Purina DentaLife was just launched this year with oral maintenance treats for both dogs and cats. After dealing with (and paying for) extensive veterinary dental care for Lila this year, maintaining good dental health for Lila is even more important than ever.

Be on the lookout in your local Sunday newspaper on October 16 for the insert with money-saving coupons for Purina Beyond products. You can find a $2 off any Beyond Dry Dog Food 3 lb bag and $3 off a Beyond Dry Dog Food 13 lb bag. You’ll also find coupons off of cat food in the insert.

  1. Susan, these are all such great tips. We keep 2 water and food dishes. That way one can go in the dishwasher while my dog has another for food and water. I never thought about washing her toys, I need to though.

  2. We always use a treat jar too- it’s how Nora knows it’s time for something special- and she can hear the lid from the other side of the house! #client

  3. Great tips! While I wash my dog Koda’s food and water bowls on a regular basis, I honestly never thought to wash his toys. Guess what I’ll be doing today? 🙂

  4. I love it to see Lila on the blog! She is so adorable. I agree it is so important to take care of our pets. My Bella is my baby – she is such a joy to our family as I know Lila is to yours.

  6. I admit, I’m bad about washing my dogs’ bowls and treat containers. Typically it’s not until they start to look a little funky that I think of it. I never thought about the fact that we wash our dishes after every use. Thanks for all the helpful tips!

  7. I used to have a small dog and I kept her food in an airtight bagel container originally designed to hold bagels. It had a large-open lid so I could easily get her 1/3 c. of food out, was easy to travel with, and kept the food fresh. These little things can make a big difference!
