I finally got frustrated the other day when I tried to reach in and find the garage door opener and instead pulled 3 cords and a penguin (yes, a penguin, more on that later) out of the storage area in the car’s center console.

a mess of cords in a car

My car has this nice little storage area that holds my garage door opener, gate clicker attached to a penguin, Ipod cord and phone charging cord (that always separates into 2 pieces).

My daughter told me that I have to explain the penguin.  Two years ago on the morning of my birthday my son asked me if I liked penguins.  I told him I do, thinking he was going to draw me a picture of a penguin for my birthday.  Later I opened a gift from my son that contained the penguin key chain above.  I thought that was sweet that he’d gone through his treasures and found something to give me.  Little did I know.  Later my oldest daughter told me that she had been cleaning out her room that morning and had a pile of things to get rid of.  She’d told her brother that he could take anything he wanted from the pile.  He took the penguin key chain to give to me without telling her.  I had to laugh and admire his resourcefulness.  So, now I have to keep the penguin key chain, no matter how much room it takes up.

So the nice little storage area will hold all these items, but they always get all tangled together. It’s extremely frustrating when you’re driving the car and fighting to pull out the item you want but instead get every other item. It’s like a cheesy magic trick.

Once I got home, I looked around to see what I could do to solve this problem.  I found this Crystal Light container.  It’s the perfect size to fit right into that compartment.

Oh and I loved the penguin story LOL

  2. I have a million cords in my console. You’ve inspired me to clean, purge and repurpose something to make it nicer! 🙂

  3. Clever. I’ve been on a mission to organize my car lately. I started with a cute garbage box and next up is an emergency kit. I think storage organization is going to have to go on my list.

  4. Very smart! My car clutter comes from things like napkins and straw papers. It’s not disorganized, just messy. I really should get better at that…

  5. Great idea! I also use containers to organize all those loose items in my car. I use clear containers that I purchased at Ikea. They are square and 3 fit just right in that console area between the seats in my car. I still have space on the side for pamphlets and receipts.

  6. Love the penguin story!

I use these crystal lite containers in my car too. I keep the car charger components in one. I keep nail clippers, nail files, and small scissors in another.
