Repurposed diy decoupage craft organizing tin with vintage pharmacy image

I have friends that collect trash, cast-offs and junk and then give it to me to repurpose.  I know I’m not the only one with such good friends. (Thanks to other bloggers I know this.)  Every time it happens I’m equally giddy that they thought of me and embarrassed that when they thought,”Who should I give this cast-off to?” they thought of me.  But friends and family, please don’t stop.  I love the inspiration that a new container provides me.

A while ago, my friend, K., gave me this empty tin.  It sat on my table for weeks.  It’s a great size for organizing in an office because it’s not too tall.  You could set it out on a desk or put it into a drawer (love flexible options).  I  knew what I wanted to do with it, I just couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do to it.

Then one day while wasting time looking for inspiration on The Graphics Fairy I found this great image.  Great because my sister-in-law is a pharmacist (need I explain more?).

I quickly printed it out on white card stock and then used the lid to trace out the portion of the image that I wanted.  Unfortunately it wouldn’t all fit (and I didn’t have the patience to figure out how to resize it).  But the portion of the image that I wanted did fit on the lid, so I was fine with cutting away the bottom portion. (note to self – figure out how to resize before the next inspiration hits).

A quick coat of Mod Podge on the back of the paper and woo hoo, we’d be good to go.  Sigh.  In my excitement, I managed to smudge some of the ink.  It looked much worse in person.  (note to self – when printing image off of computer, let ink dry thoroughly before Mod Podging.)

Since there are no mistakes in crafting (ha!) only opportunities to embellish, I decided to disguise the smudges by aging the image.  I grabbed my brown ink pad and a make-up sponge and got to work.

The brown ink helped hide my smudges age the paper nicely.  I also aged the top of the tin so it wasn’t such a stark white next to the paper.

I wasn’t thrilled with the straight line of the paper edge next to the metal.  Bleh.  No, wait.  I have a fever and the prescription is more embellishment (name that butchered paraphrased line).   So I grabbed some black bias tape that I had.

I used glue strips along the entire length  of tape so that it would be securely attached to the metal lid.

After covering the edge of the paper, I noticed that the bias tape fit perfectly on the lip of the lid.  Adding the black bias tape to the edge of the lid really gave the humble little cast-off tin a finished look.  I’m pleased with it and so was my sister-in-law.

Now off to look for more cast-off tins and containers. Hint, hint.

  2. What a coincidence. Just yesterday, I spent the day cleaning out my step-grandmother’s craft room. I came home with tons of tins. I knew that I wanted to do something with them, but wasn’t sure what. I’m off to Graphics Fairy now to find some images. Thanks for the inspiration!

  3. What a great idea, and I see so many cast off tins at the Goodwill or thrift stores…could even paint and then transfer to the lid. Really great idea. Yours turned out great.:)
