Welcome to Day 19 of 31 Days of 10-minute Decluttering Tips Challenge.  Our goal is to eliminate things we don’t need from our lives and home so that we can better enjoy life. Today should be an easy purging task, we’re going through our flashlights and batteries. Let’s see what we want to keep and what needs to be purged. Let’s clear clutter! I bet you’ve never gone through and purged your flashlights and batteries. I hadn’t until just last month when I reorganized my batteries. And even if you have done it before, it’s always good to look at items with fresh eyes.

Clearing Clutter – Tips for purging flashlights and batteries.

Grab the 6 purging bags you created earlier and the free printable Purging Clutter checklist.  Now, let’s go through our flashlights and batteries and start purging.

Take Everything Out- This is usually where I say, “Keep in mind we’re doing this in 10 minutes, so only take out as much as you can tackle in that time.” But today’s task should easily fit into 10 minutes. Be sure to gather flashlights or batteries that may be stored in different spots around the house, the garage, the work bench the camping gear and even the car. You want to gather all the flashlights because this is a great opportunity to test them and change out batteries as needed.

Group Like Items Together – Quickly group like items together. Place small flashlights together, lanterns together, and each different size of batteries should be grouped together.

Evaluate – Look at each group you’ve created. Are there any broken flashlights or lanterns? They need to go. Do you have any batteries that are corroded or a size you no longer use? They need to go. While you’re evaluating, make a list of flashlights or batteries you need to restock.

Purge – Remove items you don’t need to keep and place them in one of your 6 purging bags. Be sure to check your community’s guidelines for disposing of batteries.

Put Everything Away – Put the items you’ve decided to keep back away.

    1. With that big storm hitting the East Coast, it’s a good time for everyone to check the batteries in their flashlights. I’m off to check mine (again) now. 🙂

  2. Oh, my goodness! I am coming in late on this, but am so glad I found your series!! I am always overwhelmed when tackling purging tasks and this 10 minute break down is perfect! I am going to go back to day one and start from there. I am so bad at this that my only concern is that rather than purge when I gather my flashlights and batteries, I will decide I need to buy more! Thank you!

  3. Love these tips! We actually did our batteries earlier this month because of all the batteries we needed for remotes and controllers over the holiday break. I need to go through our flashlights though and make sure they are all working.

    1. Glad that the tips are helping. I usually forget about batteries and flashlights until I need them and then it’s too late. (I think there’s a life lesson there for me.)

  4. I never thought about cleaning out my flashlights, what a great idea! I need to do that. I have come across corroded batteries before, and that’s no fun. I always leave those to my husband.
