Welcome to Day 1 of 31 Days of 10-minute Decluttering Tips Challenge.  Our goal is to eliminate things we don’t need from our lives and home so that we can better enjoy life. Clear the clutter and make room for your best life. Now is the perfect time to go through and declutter gift wrap and supplies. Let’s see what we want to keep, what we need to keep and what needs to be purged.

Gift wrap paper, ribbons, gift tags, tissue paper, gift bags, and embellishments can quickly multiply and seemingly take over. I don’t know about you, but I tend to stock up on these supplies when they’re on sale. I’m also a big one on saving and reusing tissue paper and gift bags. I hate to throw away supplies that are in perfectly good condition and can still be used.  But this habit of stocking up on sale and saving items can quickly lead to too many things. Too. Many. Things.

Clearing Clutter – Purging Tips for Gift Wrap and Supplies

Grab the free Purging Clutter Checklist and  the 6 purging bags you created earlier.  Now, let’s go through our gift wrap supplies and start purging.

Take Everything Out- Keep in mind we’re doing this in 10 minutes. Only take out as much as you can go through in that time. You can come back to the other items another time you have 10 minutes. Lay the items you take out on a table, bed or the floor.

Group Like Items Together – Quickly group like items together. Put the wrapping paper together, the gift bags together, the ribbon together and so on. If you are just tackling one item, then put similar items together within that category; put the large gift bags together, the small gift bags together, the Christmas gift bags together and so on.

Evaluate – Look at each group you’ve created. Are there any categories you don’t need? Once my children outgrew the Sesame Street age, I didn’t need to have 10 cartoon character gift bags. How many items do you need in a category? I need to keep tissue paper, but I don’t need to keep Halloween tissue.

Purge – Remove items you don’t need to keep and place them in one of your 5 purging bags.

Put Everything Away – Put the items you’ve decided to keep back away.

  1. Such quick and easy ideas you are sharing, Susan. I have to say, my Christmas wrapping is in order. I purchased a container for it a few years ago. Now, my general wrapping paper is a mess! I have it all over the house! I will have to follow your great ideas and get organized.

    1. Sounds like you’ve got your holiday wrapping paper and supplies under control. Containers for all different types of items, like wrapping paper, really can make it easier to keep it organized. Happy organizing your everyday wrapping paper, Cynthia.

  2. I would like to join your group so I can organize along with you. Is there a way to do that or do I have search fot your new tips everyday.?

    1. You can sign up in the newsletter sign up box at the end of the post, Melody. So glad to have you join us for the challenge.

  3. I am going to have fun watching our different challenges unfold. This is the perfect time of year to clear out the wrapping supplies… get rid of all those tiny/scrunched pieces of wrapping paper! I need to do this myself:)

    1. I have to remind myself not to save those tiny pieces of wrapping paper, too, Seana. My frugal self battles my organizing self. 🙂 This year, the organizing self is winning.

  4. I like the idea of repurposing a trash basket to hold your gift wrap supplies. I have them organized in the closet, but the gift wrap is just leaning against the wall.

  5. Here we go again with our January challenges – so fun! Last year I finally started keeping my christmas bows and ribbon separately in a closet far away from my wrapping station. That is definitely helpful– free up that daily use space. Wishing you a happy new year and a wonderful month!

    1. Lol, Seana, it is that time of year for challenging ourselves, isn’t it? I’m curious about your choice to store your bows and ribbons in a separate location from your wrapping paper and bags.

  6. I’m a veteran also and you would think moving around so much I could get organized. I need to get our home organized because it’s been driving nuts. My Grandson moved in with us moved out back in with us. My Brother in law moved in with us and is now in a nursing home. We have a small business working out of our home plus we’ve had some health scares lately. So I’m saying thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    1. Sounds like you’ve got a whole lot of life going on, Loretta! I hope you find these 10-minute tasks helpful. I’m a big believer in doing tasks in manageable amounts of time and sometimes that is 10 minutes. Sometimes it’s more and that’s great, but even 10-minutes day after day will get the job done. Thank you for your service, Loretta.
