Our children’s health and well-being is our top priority as parents. When our children are young, we take them to the doctor for all those well-baby check-ups and immunizations. Making sure our adolescent “babies” are receiving vaccinations and annual check-ups are just as important. Are you familiar with the recommended vaccinations for teens?

As a military family, we’ve always been diligent about keeping current on the necessary and recommended immunizations for all of us. Since we travel often, including overseas,  it’s critical for our health. Making sure that my children are up-to-date on all recommended vaccinations has been important to me and has helped keep my children very healthy.

Did you know that while most parents and teens think it’s important for all teens to be vaccinated, the vaccination rates for teens are much lower than they should be? Unity Consortium’s survey found:

  • 34% of teens don’t know how being vaccinated helps them.
  • 41% of parents believe their teens should only see a doctor when feeling ill. This reduces the opportunity for preventive health care, like vaccinations.
  • Approximately 25% of parents and teens think that vaccines are more important for babies than teens.

Unity Consortium is committed to addressing the challenges surrounding teen and young adult health issues.  Their goal is for 9 out of 10 teens and young adults to be fully vaccinated against preventable diseases. Since vaccinations prevent disease, it simply makes sense to ensure your child is current on all recommended immunizations. Why would you not prevent a preventable disease?

Annual medical check-ups are critical for preventive health care. Those visits are even more important at ages 11-12 years and 16 years, so that adolescents receive the recommended vaccinations on-time.

Vaccinations are a fundamental part of adolescent health and guarding against preventable disease.

    1. I agree, Cynthia. It’s important for parents to educate themselves so they can make informed decisions about their child’s healthcare.
