For as long as I can remember, I’ve looked for ways to repurpose and recycle items. It makes me crazy happy to find ways to repurpose items to use for organizing around my home. Repurposing is a wonderful practice for several reasons and taking better care of the earth is the main reason for me. April is Earth Month, with Earth Day on April 22nd, and the perfect time to incorporate recycled ideas for bathroom organization in your home.
If you come to my house and open a cabinet or drawer, you’ll find that I use many repurposed items to organize my home. As a military family, we move every one to three years. Using recycled items to organize is the perfect frugal organizing solution for me. (Can you image how much it would cost to purchase new organizing items when we move every year or two?!!) I love the challenge and satisfaction of using recycled items to organize.
Why Use Recycled Items for Organizing
- Saves Items from the Landfill
- Saves Resources Needed to Produce New Items
- Saves Fuel Needed to Produce and Transport New Items
- Saves Money
- Provides a Creative Outlet
- Provides Flexibility – You can recycled it if your organizing needs change (or the military reassigns you, again).
Recycled Ideas for Bathroom Organization
Using recycled glass jars and plastic bottles are my favorites for repurposed organizing because I have many of them, they’re easy to clean and come in so many different sizes.
Adding decorative washi tape is easy to do and allows me to match my decor. It also allows me to change my decor in seconds and for just pennies.
Use glass jars to organize:
- Toothbrushes
- Cotton Swabs
- Cotton Balls
- Hair Bands and Clips
- Make-up Brushes
- Make-up
It’s also easy to cover a cardboard box with shelf liner or wrapping paper to organize larger items.
When organizing a children’s bathroom I prefer to use plastic recycled containers. My friends call me Safety Susan and it definitely applies. I worry about my children breaking a glass or ceramic container in the bathroom if they knock it over. Using plastic containers takes that worry away.
A 1-liter plastic bottle is the perfect size to hold a variety of items. I cut the bottle so it is 4 1/2 inches tall. Be careful in cutting the bottle with a utility knife. I use scissors to trim the cut edge and I use my trick to remove sticky label residue naturally to clean the bottle up.
Add some decorative washi tape or stickers to match your children’s interests. Recycled plastic containers clean up easily so they’re perfect for messy organizing jobs like holding toothbrushes.

I never thought about using a plastic liter bottle for a storage container; it’s a great idea! I’ve never tried Washi tape but it looks like a nice decorating tool. I do use boxes covered with leftover scrapbook paper for storage, though.
I love covering repurposed boxes to use for organizing, too, Brenda. You can pick up washi tape for a dollar or two a roll. I promise you’ll love it.
These are really great tips! Thank you! (client)
Thanks, Lori. Hope you find them helpful in organizing your bathroom.
I have lots of followers who enjoy creative and attractive ways to use recyclables for getting organized. I always start with “what’s on hand”… you can go back and invest in decorative containers laters if you wish. Love the washi tape – looks so pretty!
I am so-ooo with you, Seana. When I help people organize. I always have them live in the space first using boxes or containers they already have. Then if they like the space the way it’s set up, and only then, we go out and purchase containers.
I have been looking for a way to store my children’s toothbrushes, and I love the mason jar! (I also love the upcycled bottle – so smart!).
We love Tom’s of Maine! It’s the only toothpaste I will use for me or my children. 🙂
You know how I love to repurose jars and bottles, Andrea. 🙂 Glad to meet another Tom’s of Maine fan.
