It’s a bitter-sweet summer around the Organized 31 home.  My oldest “baby” is leaving for college in just over a month.  As hard as it’s going to be on me to not have my daughter, S,  around the house, it’s going to be just as difficult on her brother and sister.  They’ve made several comments the past month about this being “the last time we’ll all do (fill in activity) together as a family” or “next time we do this S won’t be here.”  I’ve realized that it’s hitting S’s brother and sister pretty hard that she’d leaving for college.  To help the three of them spend some memory-making time together this summer, they made a super easy recycled beverage bottle planter together. Super Eaasy Recycled Bottle Planters - Organized 31 #KoolOff #shop

I wanted to make this time together fun for my tween and teen kids.  My goal was to make it a sweet (pun intended) and memory-making time together.  The kids had recently been talking about how fun it is to have plants and watch them grow.  So being a crafty recycling mama, I thought it would be perfect for them to make a planter out of a fruit drink bottle and have fun while drinking the quintessential summer drink – Kool-Aid.  Lucky for me, Kool-Aid now comes in a large Ready-To-Drink #KoolOff bottle perfect for repurposing into a planter.

Start with a plastic bottle large enough to hold a plant, decorative masking tape, duct tape or washi tape,  scissors, some gravel and a plant.Super Eaasy Recycled Bottle Planters - Organized 31 #KoolOff #shop

I popped over to Walmart because this busy mama knew I could grab all my items in one place.  I found my 96 oz Kool-Aid Ready-To-Drink Kool-Aid bottle on the Juice aisle.Super Eaasy Recycled Beverage Bottle Planters - Organized 31 #KoolOff #shop

Be very careful (this is the adult participation step) to poke a hole into the bottle so you can cut the top off. Granted, my off-to-college daughter could do this step, but for the younger kiddos, please help and be very careful.Super Eaasy Recycled Bottle Planters - Organized 31 #KoolOff #shop

Start by covering the potential sharp edge of the bottle with tape. You may have to stretch and bend the tape a bit to lie flat on the curved bottle.Super Eaasy Recycled Bottle Planters - Organized 31 #KoolOff #shop

Simply add the decorative tape around the bottle in your choice of colors and pattern.  Add the pebbles to the bottom of the bottle and then add your plant.

S and her sister and brother enjoyed drinking their Kool-Aid as much as they did making the planters.  The watermelon flavor was a big hit with my kiddos.  Since we avoid drinking soda, it’s nice to have a better-for-you fruit drink that my kiddos really like.Super Eaasy Recycled Bottle Planters - Organized 31 #KoolOff #shop

My oldest daughter doesn’t know yet, but her brother and sister made the smaller planter to send to her in her first care package.  How great that I found these Kool-Aid Singles that fit perfectly into the little planter.  This will be a sweet (pun intended, again) way to remind S of this fun afternoon spent with her brother and sister.  Now I just have to make sure I get her a small plant for her room when I drop her off at college so she’ll be ready for when her little planter arrives. Remember not to cry and remember to get a plant. No problem.Super Eaasy Recycled Bottle Planters - Organized 31 #KoolOff #shop

This really is a fun and easy project for the kiddos to make on a happy summer day.  You don’t have to wait until your “baby” is going off to college to make your own super easy recycled beverage bottle planter.  Super Eaasy Recycled Bottle Planters - Organized 31 #KoolOff #shop

  2. I love that project! It was really hard when my oldest daughter left for college. Then my next daughter left and it was tough, too. Now my oldest son is getting ready to start driving and then he’ll be leaving. I have my youngest going into middle school and I can’t even believe it! Where does the time go? Hugs to you and the family as she heads off next month!
