Summer, summer, summertime means summer fun and family reunions. When I think back to my favorite childhood memories most of them revolve around family and fun summer activities.  Now that I’m a mom, I look forward to summertime, family activities and family reunions just as much, but now I plan ahead to make sure we all stay safe while we have fun. Having a DIY on-the-go sunscreen kit makes it easier to be prepared for summertime outdoor fun.

This summer my family will be spending time at the beach with aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents at a family reunion (lots of great memories are just waiting to be made).

As we’re planning our family reunion, I’m making sure that we’re planning for safety as much as we are planning for fun. I grew up in Hawai’i back in the days before anyone wore sunscreen.  Unfortunately, you can see the damage that gorgeous Hawaiian sun wrecked on my skin today and my family members have had some skin cancer issues.  Because of that, I always keep sunscreen by our backdoor and everyone in my family puts it on whenever we go out.  It’s important to apply at least 1 ounce (about 2 tablespoons) of sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside.  And don’t forget to apply it to your entire body as well as your children’s.  It’s just as important to remember to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, immediately after swimming and immediately after excessive sweating.

I like to keep my family’s favorite sunscreen in an easy-to-identify box. We can always find it when we need it and grab it to take with us when we go out.   It’s easy to make your own DIY On-the-Go Sunscreen Kit in about 10 minutes.

You’ll need a tin or cardboard box to repurpose, decorative paper, scissors or paper cutter and decoupage glue. Having a corner rounder punch makes it easier to get evenly curved corners on the paper for the lid, but it’s not necessary.

Cut the paper to fit the box. Coat the back of the paper with decoupage glue, attach the paper to the box and then coat the top of the paper with decoupage glue to make it more durable.

Since I have a family of 5, with 2 teen daughters and a tween son, everyone has a favorite kind of sunscreen. I keep the box filled with their favorite choices of sunscreen.

We go through a lot of Banana Boat® Sport Performance® Lotion Sunscreen with Powerstay Technology™ (the name tells you why it’s perfect for my active family).  The lotion is light-weight, sweat resistant, water resistant (up to 80 minutes), quick absorbing, non-greasy and won’t run into your eyes.

I’ve just discovered Banana Boat® Dry Oil Clear UltraMist® Sunscreen, which now includes argan oil.  It’s lightweight and not only provides sun protection, but also leaves my skin feeling silky-smooth and moisturized.  It’s easy to apply in a spray bottle and doesn’t feel greasy.

For the days that we just want every day sun protection when we’re at the beach, Banana Boat® SunComfort™ Clear UltraMist® Sunscreen is the choice.  It is easy to spray on and the new formula allows sand to easily brush off. It also moisturizes skin to relieve irritation from sun, chlorine and salt water.

  1. Summer is the best! I, like you, remember days in the sun with no sunscreen. We were outside at all hours and were not protected, I hope it never catches up to me. I love this container, it makes it easy to carry with you on trips. Because of the great pattern on the container, you won’t have a hard time describing it to kids (or husbands) when you ask them to go and get it!

  2. My inlaws are celebrating their 50th anniversary this summer so we are headed back for a HUGE family reunion with lots of outdoor activities planned. I will definitely have our entire arsenal of sunscreen packed for the trip!

  3. I love the idea of a sunscreen kit! I think that would be great for my family as a reminder to put their sunscreen on while they’re heading out the door. And what a fun upcycle project! Thanks for the giveaway!

  4. I love the summer time kit. I need to look into some different sunscreen for my children. I don’t completely love the sunscreen that I use on them.
