After organizing over 20 kitchens with all our military moves, I’ve picked up a few tips on organizing dishes and dishwasher detergent to make my life easier.  My goal in setting up and organizing my kitchen is to place items where I need them and to minimize the amount of walking around the kitchen I have to do during the course of my day.  As a mom, I do plenty of running around and anything that saves me extra work is a good idea in my book.

When I first move into a house, I take a few minutes to plan how I’ll organize my dishes in the kitchen.  I even draw a floor plan of the kitchen and plan out the best placement of my dishes in the cabinets.

Tips for Organizing Dishes

Store dishes near where you’ll use them.  Put pots and pans near the stove.  Put glasses near the fridge where you’ll be pouring your drinks.

Store silverware near your dishwasher.  Placing silverware near the dishwasher makes it easier to put clean silverware away, no more juggling silverware while walking across the kitchen (tell me I’m not the only one who has had that happen).

Store plates and bowls either near the dishwasher or near your table, depending on the layout of your kitchen.  This minimizes your steps either in putting the dishes away after they’re clean or getting them out to set the table.  I’m fortunate in my current kitchen that I’m able to put the plates and bowls in a cabinet that’s near both the dishwasher and the table (kind of makes up for those other kitchens where the only cabinet that could fit plates wasn’t near either).

Store your dishwasher detergent near the dishwasher.  I keep my detergent in a repurposed container that lost its lid several moves ago.  I made sure to place the container so that it’s easily accessible in the under-the-sink cabinet near the dishwasher.

Use quality dish detergent so you don’t have to wash your dishes twice.  In an effort to save money, I’ve tried almost every brand of dish detergent out there.  But I’ve decided that I don’t want to waste my time rewashing dishes any more.

I can’t wait to give it a try.  Now to decide what I’ll do with that extra time I’ll save by not pre-rinsing.  Hmm… What would you do?

  2. I have to admit, my kitchen organization is not as good as yours! I think I will go and re-organize my kitchen right away. I think the idea of silverware next to the dishwasher is great!
