It’s that gift giving time of year already. Whether it’s a hostess gift, a gift for coworkers and neighbors or treat for yourself, I try to have treats ready to give to friends this time of year. The past few years my mom has been giving better-for-you gifts to her neighbors for the holidays instead of the traditional baked goods. This year I decided to join her in giving more nutritious gifts to my neighbors and my mom’s Chili Mixed Nuts recipe is the perfect treat.
When I was at Walmart running errands, I noticed the Planter’s Peanuts Seasonal display with the Holiday Collection Tins. Bing! That repurposing light bulb went off in my head. I could use both the mixed nuts and the tin to make a nice holiday gift for my neighbors.
Before you head out to the store, be sure to download the new Blippar app for free on your Apple, Android, Blackberry or Windows device. The app allows you to blip (or scan) Planter’s seasonal nut items (and many other products, too). Once you’ve scanned the product, the Blippar app brings you to a menu bar where you can:
1. Take a selfie with Mr. Peanut
2. Browse a list of seasonal Planter’s holiday items
3. Browse recipes
I can see where my kids will have a blast taking a selfie with Mr. Peanut … over and over again. Just know that when you focus the Blippar app on the product you need to get close to the brand logo and hold the phone still. It will take 5 or more seconds to recognize the logo, so don’t get impatient, give the app time to recognize the logo (ask me how I know). Once the app recognizes the logo, it will provide you with the menu of options to interact with the product.
Once you get home with your mixed nuts, you can whip up this Chili Mixed Nuts recipe with ingredients you have at home and the entire process takes about 3 minutes plus baking and cooling time.
Ingredients
2 cups salted mixed nuts
1 1/2 Tbsp melted butter or margarine
1 Tbsp chili powder
2 tsp salt (since the mixed nuts are already salted, I’d recommend 1 tsp added salt or less, unless you really like salty snacks)
Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl.
Spread the mixed nut mixture out on a pan and bake in a 350º F oven for 30 minutes. Stir the mixed nuts several times while they are baking. Remove from the oven. You can serve them warm or cooled.
These chili mixed nuts have a subtle flavor that is not too spicy. They’re a wonderful alternative treat during the holiday season.
While the chili mixed nuts were cooling, I went to work personalizing the decorative tin. It’s certainly cute enough on its own to give a gift in, but I can’t leave well enough alone, so out came the decorative papers. I cut a 12×12 piece of paper 7 1/4 inches wide.
I added the remaining piece to the end of the 7 1/4 inch wide piece so it would wrap all the way around the decorative tin. Using the original cardboard sleeve, I scored the decorative paper so that it folds neatly around the tin. I used double stick tape to secure the new sleeve around the tin.
I added a cute tag and the gift for my neighbors is ready to go.

Hi Susan – I’m not sure which I like better – the Mr. Peanut Selfie or the nuts recipe. Hummmm… Hugs, Holly
The Mr. Peanut is kind of fun and the irony of Mr. Peanut holding a nutcracker amuses me.
This time of year there is so much sugar- I love this idea for a savory gift and snack! #client
Thanks, Jenna. Truth be told, I’d like both savory and sweet treats, but don’t tell on me.
These look so yummy and would make the perfect gift for neighbors, teachers and myself! I think I would have to make a large batch of these and make sure I keep some for myself. Love the photo opportunity too!
Thanks, Cynthia. There are other fun photo choices with Mr. Peanut, too.
What a great way to dress up delicious mixed nuts into something extra special. I admire your creativity.
Thanks, Elaine. It’s a family-favorite recipe handed down from my mom. 🙂
