How to Make a 3D Pop Up Card

You can turn this simple card into a pop up card with a few extra steps.

  1. Fold a piece of cardstock or thick paper in half to create a card.
  2. Inside the card, on the center crease, lightly draw two lines perpendicular to the fold. The lines should be about 1/2 to 1 inch apart depending on the size of the image you want to pop up.
  3. Cut a slit along each line you drew, making sure to cut it carefully.
  4. Pop that cut strip up into the inside of the card by gently pushing it up from the backside of the card.
  5. If you’re using the flower pot design above, you’ll need to attach a strip of paper across the back to use to attach the design to the pop up fold.
  6. Glue or tape your decorative image to the the folded strip that is inside the card.
  7. Close the card, making sure the image folds flat inside of the edges of the card when the card is closed.
  8. When you open the card, the folded strip will make the image pop up!
  9. Decorate the rest of the card as desired.

This allows you to attach an image or design that pops up out of the card when opened. You can use drawings, photos, cut-out shapes or anything flat to attach to the folded strip. Have fun experimenting!
