I love to have an easy crochet pattern to take in the car when we travel. I get motion sick reading in the car, but for some reason have no trouble crocheting in the car. This houndstooth crochet pattern scarf is my new favorite travel crochet pattern. It’s so easy to make and you can change the look entirely by using different yarn and different color combinations. It amazes me how versatile this pattern is. And best of all? It makes an entirely lovely scarf.
This past summer we drove hundreds and hundreds of miles doing the college visit trip adventure with my second “baby.” This houndstooth crochet pattern was perfectly easy to pick up and put down during the trip. It was so rewarding to be able to make a bunch of lovely scarves during our trip that I gave as gifts to family and friends.
It continues to amaze me how beautifully the houndstooth scarf turns out every time. Every single time. I used this simple and free pattern.

I used several different color combinations with the houndstooth pattern. The black and white looks the most houndstooth-y. I guess the black and white combination reinforces the houndstooth motif. The other color combinations are lovely, too, just not so houndstooth-y.
I found this pattern so easy to follow that I wanted to try it in different weights and colors of yarn.
It’s surprising to me how different each variation of the pattern looks just by changing the color of yarn and yarn weight.
The texture of this pattern is quite interesting and pronounced when you use just one color instead of two different ones. The texture is masculine in the grey yarn. I’m happy that my son liked the grey scarf enough that I gave it to him (it’s much more difficult to craft for a son than a daughter, so I’m always happy when I can find something to make that he would like).
This houndstooth crochet pattern is my new favorite crochet pattern and will be for quite a long time, I’m sure. Do you have a favorite crochet pattern?

Hi Susan. You found a great stitch to try out. I like the white and black scarf the most And the pink and black. Oh and the blue and black……
lol, Darlene, that’s how I feel, too.
These are so cute! I have tried knitting before, but haven’t tried crochet. I am excited to try this!
Thanks, Andrea. Crochet is so much less stressful than knitting because if you make a mistake in crochet, it’s so much easier to correct.
These scarfs are absolutely beautiful! The black and white is so classic looking. I would love to learn how to crochet.
Thanks, Stacey. Crocheting is a very forgiving needle craft. I recommend starting with it.
I used to crochet with my grandmother and have such fond memories. I cherish the pieces she made for me. I do make an occasional piece but I need to do it more often.
I find that it’s the perfect way to keep busy during long car trips, Monica. And I’m able to make handmade gifts for family and friends.
