We’ve been focusing on getting my daughter ready for college the past few weeks. That means buying a whole lot of stuff for her to take with her. We’ve focused on the practical, must-have items. But last week my daughter asked if I could make a decorative pillow to match her bedspread. “Of course, I can!” I eagerly almost yelled (I know all you moms are nodding your head in understanding). I quickly whipped up this easy to sew throw pillow and my daughter loves it (which makes this mama very happy).
Both of my daughters danced hula, so when I saw this Hawaiian print fabric in the remnant bin, I had to grab it. I didn’t know what I’d use it for, but knew I’d find some perfect project for it. So when my daughter asked me to make a throw pillow for her, I told her to look through my fabric. She immediately grabbed this Hawaiian print fabric and it goes perfectly with her quilt. I picked up a pillow form, using a 50% off coupon, so not only was this pillow easy to make, it was also inexpensive.
My pillow form was 16″ X 16″, so I measured two 16 1/2″ by 16 1/2″ squares. I sewed them right-sides together, leaving an opening on one side to insert the pillow. Then I turned the fabric right-side out and inserted the pillow. I sewed the opening closed by hand.
And voila! In about 15 minutes and for about $7, my daughter now has a throw pillow that she loves. I’m happy that she’ll have a small reminder of how much we love her right there for her to see every day.
I am no seamstress, so if I tell you that this is an easy to sew throw pillow, it really is easy. I promise.

That’s pretty and how lovely she’ll have something to remind her that her Mom loves her.
Mel & Holly, I hope she does remember how much she’s loved every single day! Mom’s get it 🙂
Hi Susan – I love easy! And what a perfect way to show your daughter every day that you love her when you aren’t there. Hugs, Holly
I love the fabric! It’s the perfect, subtle way to remind her of home while she’s away.
PS – I hope you’re doing okay! 🙂
Dianna, thanks for asking. I’m doing good right now because it’s still a month away. But I realized that I need to call my mom and tell her thank you for all she did for me many years ago when I left for college!
I love the fabric you chose for this pillow. I am always finding pieces of fabric that I can’t live without! I need to get in my sewing room and make some pillows!
I am a full-on beginner in sewing, and I absolutely love this pillow. Now I have something else to make as gifts this holiday season!. Thank you so much for sharing!
I’m so glad you’re excited about this pillow tutorial, Devoria! I promise that I’m a beginner level seamstress, so this is definitely perfect for a beginning level project.
How simple! I need new pillows for my couch, so I can’t wait to tackle your design.
I hope you have fun with the tutorial, Deanne.
