I vividly remember learning to make pompoms as a child. My mom taught me and I thought it was such an amazing trick. Once you know how to make them, an entire world of pom pom craft possibilities open up.
How To Make Pom Poms
- Gather yarn of any weight. This is a great way to use up leftover yarn from other projects if you have it.
- The size and number of yarn pom poms you’re going to make determines how much yarn you need. If in doubt, error on the side of more yarn.
- Make a pompom template from cardboard.
- You can make a square or rectangular template as wide as you’d like the pom pom to be.
- This tutorial shows how to make a notch in the rectangular template to make cutting the yarn pom pom easier.
- You can make a circular template.
- I’ve never tried this method and cutting the template is a bit more complicated, but the resulting pompoms are gorgeous.
- Or you can purchase a pom pom maker.
- You can make a square or rectangular template as wide as you’d like the pom pom to be.
- Wrap the yarn around the template until it is as thick as you’d like the finished pompom to be.
- This takes a little practice since the pom pom fluffs up after it’s tied up.
- And different weights of yarn create different plushness in the pom poms.
- Slip a piece of yarn long enough to tie through the middle of the bundle of yarn. Tie the yarn tightly.
- Slide the bundle off of the template. Tie the length of yarn tighter around the bundle.
- Snip the two sides of loops of yarn in the bundle.
- Trim the yarn to make an even and fluffy yarn pom pom.
- To make an even fluffier pom pom, you can comb the yarn with a comb. Just be careful to hold the base of the pom pom tightly so that you don’t pull the pieces of yarn out of the pom pom.
- This is a brilliant way to make pom poms in bulk.
