Last year I made easy DIY ornaments from average-sized glass balls. This year I wanted to make big statement ornaments. I choose to use extra-large Christmas balls. I quick trip to my local discount store and I found these extra-large ornament balls for just $1 each!

These monogrammed Christmas ornaments are so easy to make that it’s a great project to do with kids. But I find it relaxing to make these Sharpie dot patterns, so I enjoy making them all myself.

Supplies

Cut a letter for your monogram from vinyl or use a sticker. I simply eye-balled the size of the letter that would best fit on the ball.

Because the surface of the ball is curved, I found I needed to cut the letter and reposition it so that it laid flat. I cut the curved part at the point where it joins the straight line and then reconstructed the letter so it would lay flat on the curved surface.

Start by making dots with the permanent marker around the edge of of the letter. Once you have outlined the letter with dots, then work your way outward from the letter until you’re happy with how it looks.

You can vary the pattern of the dots to create different looks. Play around on paper first to plan how you want to make the pattern look. Then just jump in. Have fun with it. In just about 15 minutes, you’ll have created a gorgeous monogrammed ornament that makes a big impact.

You can make these for your favorite sports fan in their team colors. You can also make them in high school or college colors. Have fun with the creativity of all the different options.
