Do you need a quick and cute costume? Are you celebrating Dr. Seuss Day? Are you a Dr. Seuss fan? Do you need a couples or BFF costume idea? Well, I’ve got your costume solution today and you can make it in about 20 minutes. Really. This easy Dr. Seuss Costume idea comes from The Sneetches (you know, “Star-bellied sneetches had stars upon thars”) and is perfect for a single costume or for two people or even a family or group costume. This would also be fun for a classroom or reading teacher to make for students when reading Dr. Seuss books.

I’ve been a big Dr. Seuss fan (and who isn’t?) for as long as I can remember.  I read Dr. Seuss stories to all three of my children (over and over and over again), but The Sneetches was always one of our favorites. We even had it on VHS tape.

One year my daughter needed a last minute costume for Dr. Seuss Day. She wanted to do a BFF costume with her friend and we came up with this Sneetches costume. You really can make it in 20 minutes. The most difficult part is running to the store for t-shirts.

The yellow shirt is the body so you don’t really have to do anything to it.

scissors cutting out Sneetch neck feathers

I used an old t-shirt that we already had for the neck feathers. Use the existing collar to make the neck feathers. Simply cut random points around the collar in a complete circle. If you need more than one set of neck feathers, you can use the rest of the t-shirt to make two or three more collars, depending on the size of your white t-shirt and your Sneetches’ necks. Use the first neck feathers collar as a pattern to make another one from the bottom of the same t-shirt. With the second neck feathers, you’ll have to stitch, use fabric glue or even staple the sides together to make a circular collar.

I printed a star pattern out using my word processing program and then cut a star from green felt. You’ll only need one green start for a couples or BFF costume. If you’re creating a family or group costume, you’ll want to make green stars for half of the t-shirts.  You can sew the green star on the t-shirt or you can use fabric glue or safety pins to attach it.

The costume goes together quickly. Put on the t-shirt, slip the neck feather on and then add the distinctive Dr. Seuss-ish hair twigs using pipe cleaners.

I love this photo of my daughter wearing her Star-bellied Sneetch costume. Her friend was the plain-bellied Sneetch. They were so cute together in their Sneetches costumes. And best of all, we whipped both costumes up in about 20 minutes.
