I’ve been gradually transitioning my family to clean eating foods. We all agree that clean eating versions of our favorite foods are more flavorful and fresh tasting. We’re not willing to give up our favorite foods, I’m just looking for new, cleaner ways to make our favorite dishes.
Many of our favorite dishes call for chili spice mix as one of the ingredients. It occurred to me recently that I could make my own homemade chili spice mix and clean up many of our favorite meals.
You can see how vivid the colors are and the flavor is just as vivid. It was so easy to make this clean eating chili spice mix with ingredients I already had in my home. It took about four minutes to make a big batch of the chili spice mix (it took longer to take the lids off the jars and put them back on.)
I already used this homemade chili spice mix as a key ingredient in my family’s favorite chili recipe and it did taste fresher and bolder. I’m hooked on this clean eating version of the chili mix packets.
Homemade Chili Spice Mix
I added a label to the back of the jar so I can easily replenish my homemade chili spice mix. I know we’ll be using this spice mix up quickly. The label is easier to use than to pull out a cookbook and flip to the right recipe. I never have to wonder where I filed the recipe or which cookbook I filed it in. I just have to turn the jar around and voilá, there’s the recipe.
I chose to use a repurposed glass jar to hold my clean eating chili spice mix. I prefer to use glass storage containers to safely hold my clean eating ingredients. You can read more of my clean eating food storage tips that include using glass storage containers.

Very smart to put the recipe on the container! Does this mix last as long as the packets (in terms of expiration date?). I think it would make a great Christmas gift!
Ah, good question, Seana. It should last about a year, which is the shelf life on ground spices.
