Today we’re tackling Day 4 of the 31 Days of 10-minute Purging Tips Challenge. Our goal is to eliminate things we don’t need and clear clutter so that we can better enjoy life. Today we’re going to pull out all our jeans, only keep the ones we love (and that fit) and declutter our jeans.
I don’t know about you, but if I don’t keep on top of the jeans in my closet, they can easily multiply (seemingly overnight) into three times more jeans than I need. I love jeans. I live in jeans and have a ridiculously difficult time purging jeans. I have to make myself go through my jeans and purge every year or I would never do it (ever).
Clear Clutter – DeclutteringTips for Jeans

Grab the free Purging Clutter Checklist and the 6 purging bags you created earlier. Set your timer for 10 minutes and let’s run to the bedroom and pull out all the jeans.
Take Everything Out- Grab all the jeans you own and pile them out on the bed or floor. Be sure to get any jeans that may be in the laundry, too. You can return them to the laundry after you’re done purging.
Group Like Items Together – Quickly group like items together. Put skinny jeans together. Put boot cut jeans together. Depending on how many jeans you have, you may have to make subcategories in each of your larger categories, for example dark wash skinny jeans and light wash skinny jeans.
Evaluate – Look at each group you’ve created. Are there any jeans you don’t like or know don’t fit? Move those to your purge pile now. Now it’s time to try every pair of jeans on. Be brutally honest with yourself. Do they fit well? Do you love them? If you they don’t fit or you don’t really love them – they need to go. You’re are worth jeans that fit and that you love. You deserve better than poor fitting jeans.
This is where (because I really do understand how difficult this can be) you can keep two pairs of jeans that either don’t fit or your don’t love. You can keep one pair that doesn’t fit if you feel you need them as insurance for weight changes. You can also keep one pair for painting, yard work, just plain junk jeans. You don’t need more than one in each of those categories. Trust me. Keeping a bunch of jeans just because you might gain or loose weight doesn’t make sense. Plus, if you keep them for more than a year or two, those jeans will be out of style. You deserve jeans that make you feel wonderful, not out of style and frump.
Purge – Remove items you don’t need to keep and place them in one of your 6 purging bags.
Put Everything Away – Put the items you’ve decided to keep back away.

My favorite way to organize jeans it to fold and file them. It makes it so much easier to see each pair of jeans and grab just the pair that you want (without knocking a pile of jeans over). Check out my tips on how to fold and organize jeans.

I was just chuckling about this, Seana. I’ve got sporting goods coming up later this month and you tackled them today. 🙂 I’m loving learning from your ideas.

I am loving your chores, today was a freebie, as I had done that when you showed how to fold and store them a while ago. If not for this, I would never tackle my problem areas. I have visited the recycle dumpster with 3 loads so far, and gotten rid of 1 tub of Christmas decorations. Why were 5 empty coffee cans in my plastics cupboard????? Thanks so much.

I’m so happy to hear that you’re finding these 10-minute purging tasks helpful. Enjoy your day off today (and take a minute to admire your nicely organized jeans 🙂 ). I think that those coffee cans and glass jars have a party at night and invite friends over. I can’t think of any other explanation for why they show up hidden in the back of in cupboards. Let me know how the rest of this challenge goes for you. Happy New Year, Roberta.
